Family History Question by Senator J: “Family History?”
I’m doing family history and I’m stuck because on both sides of my family I have no idea (and no one else in the family) what the maiden names of my great-grandmothers are. How can I find out? Also, how can I find out where in a particular country or region (as in French region/province) someone may have came from?

My mother’s maternal grandmother was born in Austria-Hungary in the late 1800s and my mother’s paternal grandmother was born in t Ohio in the mid 1800s.

You might try “familysearch.org”. If they went through Ellis Island-their site is Ellis Island.org . Have you tried your grandfather’s family tree on any genealogy sites, such as Ancestors.com ? Good luck, hope you find what you are looking for. I love genealogy..Shirley

If your great-grandmothers were married in this country – and you know where the marriage took place – search the County Clerk’s Office of the County in which they were married. These records may also be found in the marriage records of your grandparents as well as the birth records of your grandparents. Say your grandmother’s last name was Smith – your parents’ birth certificate would list his/her mother’s maiden name which would be your great-grandparent’s name. Then you can search marriage records for your great-grandmother’s maiden name. It would appear on the marriage license.
I believe this is true, also, for Canada and the U.K.
Again, check with the Mormons – the Church of Latter Day Saints – LDS/Geneology.com. By far the most extensive, and FREE, source of this type of information.
If they were born and/or married overseas, it’s a BIT more problematic – but you still might be able to do it.
Good Luck!

The first part’s difficult to answer because what resources may be available depend on time and place. With more information someone may be able to help.
And who knows, you could get lucky sorting through others’ online trees. On the other hand some are wrong.
The 2nd’s difficult because France is well … provincial about how and where records are kept. Even as late as the 1970s to live in a town you’d be checked in, and out, by the mayor or you don’t live there. In other words you have to have a pretty good idea where to look before you ask to look for records.
Your grandparents’ death certificates should give you the name of both parents, including the mother’s maiden name.
I am excited about your blog! When I was deciding my niche to market online, I was seriously considering genealogy! I decided I need to put my focus elsewhere but I have to say, Good luck to you!
